the journey to self enlightenment through television

Tag Archives: The Office

First up?  My DVR.

And for those of you who were wondering, this is going to be one of those posts where I talk about something painfully mundane, but seemingly interesting.  Well, to me anyway.

Of all the things that need a good cleaning out, my DVR is definitely on the top of that list.  Well, that and my entire apartment.  Because I just want to relax and not worry about anything from Christmas to New Years.

The simple fact is that there is way too much clogging up the DVR.  Way too much.  As in, I should really delete stuff after I watch it.  But some shows just deserve to be watched 2 or 3 times.  And mostly because there are so many other things on tv that are just boring and silly, and I hate daytime tv, so I guess my DVR will remain relatively full.

  • 13 episodes of The Office
  • 2 episodes of Men of a Certain Age
  • 3 episodes of The Big Bang Theory
  • 9 episodes of Two and a Half Men
  • 3 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose
  • 1 episode of House
  • 1 episode of How I Met Your Mother
  • 7 episodes of The Simpsons
  • 1 episode of Let’s Make a Deal
  • 1 episode of WAVY News 10 Local News
  • 7 episodes of Family Feud
  • 2 episodes of The Family Guy
  • 2 episodes of Legend of the Seeker
  • 9 episodes of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
  • 1 DOUBLE episode of Dollhouse – this one keeps recording in 2-hour increments, which is fine, because then it looks like I only have 1 episode, even though there’s 2
  • 1 episode of the Tonight Show
  • 7 episodes of Lopez Tonight
  • 1 episode of SNL
  • 1 episode of Community
  • 1 episode of Cougar Town
  • 1 episode of Glee
  • 1 episode of Modern Family
  • 2 episodes of The Jay Leno Show
  • 2 episodes of Late Show with David Letterman
  • 1 episode of The Price is Right
  • Something’s Got to Give
  • Talladega Nights
  • Dr. Suess’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas

Final count – 94% full with 85 episodes/movies/tv specials.  It’s sick.  And there is way too much on my DVR.  I wonder if I’ll make it through everything so I can make room for new stuff.

Honestly, I love EW for a lot of things.  But most of all, I love them for their lists.  They provide me with much needed blog fodder from time to time.  And who doesn’t love lists?  I mean, really.

But I love this particular list because it takes an honest look at what’s wrong with TV these days, and some shows that we just shouldn’t be watching anymore.  I will say upfront that I don’t completely agree with every show on this list, but I can certainly respect why they are on it.

  1. Heroes – Not gonna lie, I broke up with this one after season 2.  And then again after season 3.
  2. Dollhouse – One of those shows I love, that I don’t think should be on this list… but the ratings just aren’t up far enough yet to keep it from failing in its Friday night timeslot.
  3. America’s Next Top Model – I’ve never watched this show, and I don’t plan to start now.
  4. Project Runway – Um… same deal.  But hasn’t it been on long enough?
  5. The Office – I love this show, and really don’t see an end in sight.
  6. Gossip Girl – Ha!  I really tried watching this one, but it’s a daytime soap opera that airs at night on a crappy network.  The End.
  7. Hell’s Kitchen - This used to be a must-see… sadly, not so much anymore.
  8. Bones – I love this show.  I’ve always loved this show.  BUT it is one of those shows that you can put down for awhile, and pick up later and not miss much.  That could be deadly for a show.
  9. House – Yet another show that I love, but can drop for awhile and pick up whenever.  Sure, there’s new things going on this season…
  10. One Tree Hill – This is one that I tried watching, and it felt a little like a soap opera, and a little bit forced.  6 seasons might be long enough.
  11. Dancing with the Stars – They try to keep it new and fresh, but like American Idol, it’s just getting old.
  12. 90210 – I’m fairly certain I remember mentioning last season that this was a mistake to begin with.  Again, I will say, why mess with a good thing?  The original was good.  Leave it there.
  13. Glee – Ok.  I love love LOVE this show.  No, it’s not for everyone.  But I am definitely surprised that it’s even on this list.
  14. Private Practice – I actually finally got caught up with this one like I did with Grey’s Anatomy.  I never really like it all that much, but it was always something to watch when there was nothing else on.
  15. Fringe – Even though Joshua Jackson is my TV-boyfriend, I’ve always felt that this one needed to go.  Come on.  It’s the X-files.  It’s already been done.
  16. Mad Men – I often hear mixed feelings about Mad Men.  It’s good, it’s not good.  Truthfully, I’ve been wanting to check it out, but there’s always something else to be watched.
  17. CSI: Miami – Procedural shows are always great because they really know what they’re talking about.  But CSI has been on for a LONG time.
  18. Ghost Whisperer – Another soapy show that just doesn’t need to be on anymore.
  19. Smallville – Apparently this one has run its course.  Smallville is yet another show that I want to get into, but the more seasons there are, the harder it is, and the longer it’s going to take.  And do I really want to invest all that time?
  20. American Idol - Old and tired.  And I hate reality TV.  And without Paula’s crazy antics and sexual tension with Simon, I just think it’s a waste.  And besides, it’s been on way too long.  It’s just old.

There are definitely a few shows on this that list that I vehemently do not agree with.  But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  As long as they can accept that Bones, House, Glee and Dollhouse are actually good shows.  And I will not be breaking up with any of these shows this season.

There are, however, a few shows that don’t show up on this particular list. Two and a Half Men is a great show, but with recent changes this season like Charlie being in a committed relationship are just things that are going to hurt the original premise of the show.  Plus, Jake is getting a little old to still be the “half” man on that show.

How I Met Your Mother is another show that I’m less than impressed with this season.  Not gonna lie, after that Britney Spears episode two seasons ago, I’ve been really turned off.  And I will say that there are a few good scenes in a few episodes this season, but Barney being committed and dating Robin just really takes away from his character mold.

I don’t see either of those shows ending anytime soon, but it’s something to think about.

What shows are you thinking about breaking up with this season?

Thursday night on the Office marked a HUGE milestone in Office history: Jim and Pam finally got married!

I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to do a live post or a semi-live post, and I took notes all during the episode.  But re-reading over the notes I took, I don’t think that such an event would warrant a live or semi-live post.

ANYway.  Jim and Pam are married!

the-office-fischer-krasinski_l

And what could be more awesome?  Not much.

The entire episode wasn’t the strongest I’ve seen, but watching the culmination 5 or more years of Jim and Pam just goofing around the Office was enough to make it a really great episode.

A few things that happened:

  • Andy did a split and injured his scrotum.  And THEN asked Pam – the BRIDE – to drive him to the Emergency room.  Wow.
  • Dwight is a ladies man.  He slept with the Maid of Honor, and literally did a very un-Dwight thing by blowing her off after.  It was hysterical.
  • Jim and Pam had a backup plan.  Jim says “I bought the tickets as soon as I saw the video on youtube.”  Meaning, the video of the entire bridal party dancing down the aisle to a song.  And Jim and Pam ACTUALLY got married on a boat in the middle of Niagara Falls.  Good plan, Jim.  But the dancing down the aisle was hilarious anyway.
  • Michael and Pam’s mom.  Ew… And Pam’s mom is different in this episode than in her original appearance back in the Sexual Harrassment episode of season 2.  But still, Michael and Pam’s mom?  Gross.
  • Kevin had tissue boxes for shoes.  And fake hair.  I couldn’t figure out why he looked so different in the commercials for the episode.  And then he mentioned that he wanted to have an edge, so he bought fake hair.  Way to go, Kevin!

Honestly, there was so much going on in the episode, but all those things are what made it great.  And also, Jim and Pam are married.

I wanted to cry.

Seriously.

Because who doesn’t love a good wedding?

Jim had a great speech/toast during the rehearsal dinner.

Four years ago, I was just a guy who had a crush on a girl who had a boyfriend. And I had to do the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, which was to wait. And don’t get me wrong, I flirted with her…I just had little moments with a girl who saw me as a friend. And a lot of people told me I was crazy to wait this long for a date with a girl who I worked with, but I think that even then I knew that I was waiting for my wife.

jam

Awww, Jim.  But seriously, gentle readers.  I think that was a great way to tell their story.  So many screw ups and mishaps, and debauchery all around.  I think that was the Office way to have a wedding.

And I can’t wait to see the deleted scenes!

What did you think about Jim and Pam’s wedding?

The Office – The Meeting

Michael gets worried after David Wallace and Jim have a private meeting. Pam tries to get a headcount for the wedding. Darryl’s worker’s compensation claim makes Dwight suspicious.

No one should be surprised that this week’s episode was a little weaker than the premiere.  Actually, while it was a weaker episode with comedy, I definitely think it was more emotionally charged than most episodes.  And that came from the tension between Jim and Michael.  Jim exerts himself and basically reprimands Michael for telling David that he didn’t deserve the promotion.

It was really cool to see Jim take a stand.  I can’t wait to see that play out more now that they are going to be “Co-Managers.”

Community – Spanish 101

In Spanish class, Senor Chang asks the students to pair up for a project. Jeff’s attempt to team up with Britta fails and he ends up displeased with his actual partner. Annie and Shirley assist Britta with her cause for social justice.

Second episode out of the way – and not as good as the first.  Although Chevy Chase is making strides at being one of the funnier characters on the show.  I don’t have much to say about this episode other than Chevy Chase was funny.  I’ve watched it 3 times, and I’m really not impressed by it.  One more episode will tell.  And also, Chriso is LOVING the show, so it looks like it may be a permanent fixture on my DVR.  * sigh *

~~~~~
Parks and Recreation – Stakeout
After discovering marijuana being grown in the pit, Leslie becomes determined to find out whose crop she had stumbled across.
Umm… it was all about weed.  Oh, and Amy Poehler was funny.
~~~~~

Bones – Harbingers in the Fountain

For the past six weeks Booth has been recovering from brain surgery, and Sweets has finally certified him as mentally fit to return to duty. Meanwhile, while reading her tarot cards, Angela’s psychic reveals that there are several bodies buried under a fountain. Booth and Brennan are skeptical about checking it out, but are surprised when they find the remains of eleven bodies exactly where the psychic said they’d be.

Cyndi Lauper was the guest star.  Chriso and I watched the ENTIRE episode before he said, HEY, I know her.

Bones – The Bond in the Boot

Brennan and Booth are asked to investigate the death of a man who was murdered for the secret contents of his briefcase. They suspect that secret operatives are at work, and their theory is proven correct when they find the liquified remains of a CIA agent in the trunk of a car. Meanwhile, Brennan’s new best-selling book causes tension between her and Booth, and Wendell loses his scholarship.

These last two episodes of Bones were really very good.  It’s the same formula as it’s always been, which is good.  What makes this season really good so far is the relationship between Booth and Bones.  There’s always been tension, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this season would be THE season where they would finally decide that they need to be together.  Anyone who has been faithful to the show will know the excitement.  The old adage goes that loyalty will always be rewarded.  So, I think we are going to see some rewards this weekend.

What were you watching this week?

800 – NPH busts out with THE most awesome Emmy’s introduction EVER!

804 – NPH a reality show junkie?  AND loves award shows

806 – He does an AMAZING introduction and is INSANELY funny.  The lack of theme song bit was classic

808 – First genre: Comedy.  They are doing something different this year where they are going genre by genre.  I know I haven’t watched the Emmy’s in a few years, but I really think this was the best way to come back.

809 – And who doesn’t LOVE NPH?

810 – First category introducers?  Tina Fey and John Hamm.  Seth McFarlane isn’t drunk yet?  Dude, seriously?  LOL

812 – Kristen Chenoweth – NOT at all surprised by that.

813 – Chriso says I’m one for one.  APPARENTLY we’re taking bets on who’s going to win in different categories.  Kristen won for best comedic actress – she’s crying, but she’s such an incredible actress.

814 – “I want to thank the Academy for recognizing a show that is no longer on the air.”  LOVE HER!

818 – Took a pizza and Dr. P break… gotta love commercials.  Nothing like Super Bowl commercials where there’s actually something interesting to watch.  Just good enough for what it is.

820 – Aaaaaand NPH is back!  and the announcer is pretty interesting.

821 – THE CAST OF HIMYM to introduce the next category: Outstanding writing in a Sitcom

822 – Alyson Hannigan looks like a red-head again!  I can’t tell you how excited I am

823 – Ok, so all the best writing is done on 30 Rock?  Wow.  Ummm…. yeah, no?  I don’t buy that.  There are MUCH better written shows out there.

824 – Amy Poehler has a really pretty dress, but is not at all flattering.  Julia Louis-Dreyfuss looks amazing.

825 – Best Actor in a comedy… so many AMAZING actors.  And the Emmy goes to John Cryer!  Great choice.  NPH was also nominated – how does that work?

827 – Another commercial break…

833 – Does anyone know how much I LOVE NPH?  He’s making jokes about how the host of the Emmy’s didn’t win.. And now Justin Timberlake is taking about being a comedian

835 – Outstanding Lead Actress – Toni Collette… Um, again, I think there were better nominees, but she has an accent.  So there’s that.

837 – NPH is talking to John Cryer in the press room… clearly he’s upset :)  Or maybe he’s just being funny.

838 – John Cryer: “In your face, Neil Patrick Harris”

840 – Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake for best guest actor/actress.

841 – Best directing in a comedy series: Jeffrey Blitz, from the Office.  That was definitely a great choice for “Stress Relief.”

844 – COMMERCIALS!  Woot!

848 – And who doesn’t love Rob Lowe?

849 – Outstanding Lead Actor in Comedy: Alec Baldwin should not win… and Steve Carrell is fantastic!

851 – And the winner is…Alec Baldwin?  Ok… again.  30 Rock is not all that great, and seriously?  I could have sworn that Charlie Sheen or Steve Carrell had it in the bag.  Gah!  That’s messed up.

853 – And the Family Guy’s Brian and Stewie are talking HIMYM!  PRICELESS!

854 – New Genre: Reality!  Good lord.  I may want to take a nap… Um… can anyone figure out WHY reality TV needs to get ANY awards???  There’s NOTHING that goes into them.  They’re cheap to produce, and not at all creative.  Regurgitated, mindless crap

856 – Because we needed to see dancers from one of the dance shows?  Um… I’d ALMOST rather see Kanye West interrupt this little number here.

857 – Ok, the dance number was good… but still.

858 – John Cryer and Hayden Panettiere… Love him, I’m ok with her.

859 – Jeff Probst wins for Survivor.  BUT he congratulates NPH on a good job hosting the Emmys.

900 – One hour down.  Few more to go.  And some commercials

903 – Commercials  for Monday night premieres… Can’t wait.

906 – Tracy Morgan is the next presenter… he stuttered a bit… and wasn’t all that funny.  You see, there are writers who write jokes for comedians for award shows.  Tracy should have found a better writer.

907 – The Amazing Race is a winner.

909 – New genre: Movies and Mini-series.

910 – And now I have to pee.  Where are the commercials when you need them?

912 – Outstanding supporting actress in movie or mini-series… not gonna lie.  I’ve never heard of any of those actress OR the movies.

914 – Now supporting actors.  I actually know the actors, but the movies are still unknown.  Ken Howard is a winner.

917 – Coming up?  Tribute to winners passed

921 – Looking for a list online for the nominees this year.  Not that it matters at this point, but I’m trying to nail down EXACTLY what the 5 genres are.

922 – Grey’s Anatomy stars Kate Walsh and Chandra Wilson.  2 FANTASTIC women onstage.

923 – Kate Walsh’s dress is not all that flattering, but Chandra looks amazing!  And Brendan Gleeson is a winner for “Into the Storm.”

925 – NPH keeps checking in with the “Best Seat in the House Winner.”  A great sight gag, but it’s going to get old after a while.

926 – And I don’t like Jennifer Love Hewitt.  I think there’s a reason I won’t be watching her show this year, and it’s not because I don’t like the paranormal stuff.

927 – I may have to take a look into this whole TV movie/mini-series thing.  Those movies look incredible.  And there must be something to the whole winning an award thing.

930 – NPH invited the accountants onstage who are going to explain how to tabulate the award votes – AND THE EMMY’S WERE INTERRUPTED BY DR. HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!  Have I mentioned that I LOVE NPH???  Because I do!  And Joss Whedon is my hero!

931- Nathan Fillion even reprises his role as Capt Hammer!  Yup.  BEST. AWARD SHOW. EVER.

933 – Uh, so after the appearance of Dr. Horrible and the rest of the cast, I’m REALLY tempted to just call it a night.  But I won’t.

934 – Jessica Lange.  Looking old, but still such a great actress!  She was in Tootsie.  Which I finally just watched a few weeks ago.

936 – The cast of Big Bang is coming up soon.  YAY!

942 – Keifer Sutherland and that lady from Fringe, whose name I can’t remember Anna Torv… Gray Gardens won for best movie.

945 – Little Dorritt for Best mini-series

947 – New genre: Variety.

950 – The cast of Big Bang… moderately funny onstage.

954 – The best way to introduce the nominees for a category yet… Best writing for a variety show.  Was actually pretty awesome.  Billy Crystal… Conan O’Brien… really great.

955 – Winner?  The Jon Stewart writing team… although, they did not have the best nominee introduction.

1001 – Another hour gone… and who knew that Jimmy Fallon did an episode of Spin City.  And he’s doing a Kanye spoof thing.

1003 – HELLOOOOO, Hugh Jackman!

1004 – Clearly, we were rooting for the Muppets.  And Hugh Jackman won.  Well, his team won.  And now I’m torn.

1006 – Ricky Gervais.  Digs at Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson.  And he can.  Syndication rocks!

1008 – And now it’s time for best Variety show… The Daily Show.

1010 – And NPH gets more kudos!  Clearly, this is the BEST award show ever!

1014 – Getting a little bored with the commercials.  I don’t have to pee this time, and I want to see the drama category.

1016 – Final Category: Drama!  Woot!

1019 – 2 L’s, 2 O’s and only 1 C… Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J

1020 – Michael Emerson for Lost, for best supporting actor in a drama

1021 – Oustanding actress? Cherry Jones for 24.  Amazing how much people love 24.  Shame.  Grey’s Anatomy had 2 nominations this year: Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson.

1023 – Musical interlude: Sarah Mclachlan.  ”I Will Remember You” for the memorial of great actors past.  Amazing.  Truly amazing.

1027 – Sarah McLachlan has such an amazing voice.  And I realize I’ve used the word “amazing” several times.  But it totally applies.

1033 – 2 of my favorite vampires onstage… Angel and the guy from True Blood.  But I love David Boreanaz more.

1034 – Michael J Fox is a presenter.  Awesome!  And he looks great!

1039 – Outstanding lead actress: here we go!  Glenn Close, Sally Field, Mariska Hargitay, Holly Hunter, Elizabeth Moss, Kyra Sedgewick…

1040 – Glenn Close.  There were 3 heavy hitters.  That was such a heavy category.  But all the women definitely fit the bill.

1043 – Commercial time.  And the corner of my TV screen just told me that the Emmys are going 5 minutes over.  Good thing Chriso set the DVR to record the news show afterwards.  THANKS, Chriso!  Love you!

1048 – Dana Delaney?  A new housewife?  Hmmm…

1049 – Michael C Hall for Dexter and Hugh Laurie for House… I’m definitely torn…. and the winner was Brian Cranston?  Can we say “conspiracy”?  Or “wicked lame”?  Or how about “doesn’t make sense”?  Dexter AND House are both amazing shows.  AND Michael C Hall and Hugh Laurie BOTH deserved this award.  I’m officially annoyed.

1051 – Saved the best for last: Bob Newhart to introduce for best Comedy Series.  They couldn’t have picked a better presenter.

1054 – HIMYM and the Office were frontrunners.  WTF is up with 30 Rock?  Have I mentioned that there are better shows out there?  Because I’m pretty sure I have.

1058 – Every time Chriso hears the name Sookie Stackhouse, he mentions his first love.  Sure, I know the last name isn’t all that common, but just because the name is the same doesn’t mean there’s any REAL connection.

1100 – Sigourney Weaver to present the best Drama series.  Big Love, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, Mad Men… This was a heavy category.

1101 – And Mad Men was a winner.  *Sigh*  I really wanted Dexter or House to win for this category.  Good lord, I’m not really sure what’s going on.

Congratulations to all the winners and the nominees this year!  This was a great one for a lot of TV.  Totally turned it around for me.  Haven’t watched the Emmy’s in 2 years.  NPH definitely made it AWESOME!

What did YOU think of this year’s awards?

*SPOILER ALERT*

Just as an FYI, I’m about to reveal some secrets about what I JUST watched.  If you haven’t already watched the episodes, or don’t care about spoilers, read on.  Otherwise, take a break, watch the episode and come back later.

*SPOILER ALERT*

So, here’s what I watched tonite…

From the DVR:

The Office – “Gossip” (Season Premiere – S6, Ep1)

Michael searches for office gossip to share, while Andy struggles with his heterosexuality.

Thoughts:  Um, this opener was unbelievably funny.  The cold open was absolutely hysterical with Michael, Dwight and Andy playing “Par Core” around the office and in the parking lot.  What did we find out in this episode?  So much.  Everyone has a secret to share.  Pam is pregnant.  Stanley is having an affair.  Or WAS having an affair.  And Andy isn’t gay.  Or is he?  He kept screaming for Michael to tell him since Michael was the one that started the rumor in the first place.

Community – “Pilot” (Series Premiere – S1, Ep1)

A new band of misfits at Greendale Community College, led by Jeff Winger, form a study group where they eventually learn more about themselves than the coursework.

Thoughts:  Wow.  I don’t know what to say about this one.  I actually REALLY enjoyed this.  And that was only the first episode.  It’s pretty rare for me to really attach myself to a show after just the first episode.  Even though I’ve done it before, it does not happen often.  One of my favorite lines (said by a character whose name I do not yet know) after receiving a text message, and then his friend gets one : “Does yours say you have to pee too?”  Bloody.  Hysterical.

What’s on the docket for tomorrow?  Well, I recorded Bones and Vampire Diaries, so I’ll have to watch those in the morning, perhaps before recording whatever is going to be on tomorrow night.  Hmmm…

What were your thoughts on tonight’s episodes?
