the journey to self enlightenment through television

I’ve been struggling for weeks with what to watch this season for tv.  Do I want to add more comedies?  Is there room for another drama?  So many questions and less than a week to go until the major premiers start happening.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am more reliant on my DVR now than I ever have been.  I find this is because Hubs and I keep relatively different schedules and watch most of our shows together.

So without further adieu, here are my recommendations.

On Monday:

  • At 8PM, How I Met Your Mother. Although, I don’t hold out much hope for this particular series anymore.  I’ve been let down way too many times, and the new “let’s finally meet the mother storyline seems too good to be true.
  • Also at 8PM, you’ll find House.  I’ve always loved this one.  I find that I enjoy recording it and watching it right away.  Unfortunately, FOX and Verizon do not have any type of agreement for OnDemand programming, so I can’t say just look for this one OnDemand like I would for some other favorites.
  • At 9PM, Two and a Half Men.  This is another show that’s been around for awhile, but has started lacking in overall story.
  • At 10PM is one of my favorites, Castle.  But this one you can find OnDemand.
  • Check out the new Hawaii 5-0, also at 10PM.  I’m not so sure about this one, mostly because there’s been so much hype around it.  I’ll give it 3-episodes.

On Tuesday:

  • At 8PM, a fan favorite Glee will be there to watch and love and sing along with.
  • No Ordinary Family with Julie Benz will also show up in the 8PM spot.  I love Julie Benz, and I like the idea of superheroes.  This happens to be an ABC show, so I may or may not try to check it out OnDemand.  If it’s good enough, I’ll just have to watch it live or DVR it.
  • At 10PM, watch Parenthood. You will often find NBC shows OnDemand, but it’s still a great show to watch.

On Wednesday:

  • Check out a new JJ Abrams show at 8PM.  Undercovers.  It looks good, but only time will tell.
  • At 9PM, my new guilty pleasure Hellcats is on.  Yes.  I enjoy shows about cheerleaders.  It might be awful, but it’s like a car wreck or going to a hockey game.
  • Also at 9PM is Modern Family.  You’d be a fool to miss this Emmy Award Winning show.
  • At 9:30PM, watch Cougar Town.  Although it’s less about cougaring and more about dysfunctional families, it’s still pretty good.  And Jennifer Aniston will be making a cameo this season.

On Thursday:

  • At 8PM, on a Thursday night which is the most jampacked night for tv, you should be watching Community.  If you caught it last season, you’re in for a treat in the next season.  If you missed it, well… you missed a lot.
  • Also at 8PM on CBS is The Big Bang Theory.  Enough said.
  • At 9PM you should watch The Office.  It is Steve Carrell’s last season, and it would be a shame to miss it.  Even though I think they should throw in the towel after this…
  • I’m a HUGE Grey’s Anatomy fan.  You’ll find it at 9PM on ABC.  However, if you miss it, you might be able to catch in OnDemand.
  • If you like Grey’s, you probably like Private Practice, which is on immediately after at 10PM.

On Friday:

  • You should be trying to catch up on anything you missed and delete things from your DVR to make room for the following week.  I don’t usually find anything of interest on Friday nights, but you can be the judge.

On Saturday:

  • Get outside.  Enjoy some fresh air.  Come home, rent a movie and relax.  Or… go out.  Have date night.  There’s nothing really good on anyway.

On Sunday:

  • At 8PM, you can find a classic staple in American television, The Simpsons.
  • At 9PM, you MUST watch Dexter on Showtime.  Period.  The End.

So, Gentle Readers, those are my opinions on what to watch this season.  I’m sure as the season gears up, there will be some changes to the lineup.

What will YOU be watching this fall season?

I hate to say “I told you so,” but – I told you so.

Well, maybe I told you so isn’t the proper fit for this type of news scenario, but it sure feels like I was ahead of the game when I said Leno would fail in the 10pm timeslot.  Sure, his premiere ratings were good, given that everyone wanted to see what Leno had up his sleeve at the point.  But there has been a steady decline since then.

NBC didn’t want to fight Leno for ratings if he were to go to a different network.  So they made him all kinds of promises, and signed a 5-year contract that included 2 years in the 10 pm timeslot.

Also, NBC really wanted Conan O’Brien to take over the Tonight Show.  And who can blame them?

But the dilemma now is that Leno is failing, and NBC can’t figure out what to do with him.  I don’t see them giving him the Tonight Show back, especially since Conan has average ratings and isn’t failing miserably.  And also, Conan has a contract with NBC, and if they break it, NBC will end up owing Conan a fortune.

They still have to do something with Jay Leno.  So, the Tonight Show is out of the question.  There has also been some talk about moving the Tonight Show to air a half hour later, and using Leno as the direct lead in.  Also a mistake, in my opinion.  And quite unfair for Conan.  He’s not getting a fair chance to show what he’s got because Leno keep screwing around.  If NBC DIDN’T have Leno, especially as a lead in, would Conan do better in the ratings?  Would it be a better show?  And what if he didn’t have to compete with Leno?  Would that make a difference?  And what about that hack, Jimmy Fallon?  Is any of this affecting HIS late night show?

A quick segue about Jimmy Fallon: I don’t like him as a late night talk show host.  I pretty much think that his looooong microphone, and the way he holds it, has something to do with him having an inferiority complex.  Or perhaps it’s a penis thing.  Whatever it is, he might be a comedian, but he was not built to host his own talk show.  His monologues seem forced.  His interviews seem forced.  And he looks genuinely uncomfortable onstage.  The long and short of it is: I don’t like Jimmy Fallon.

End Rant.

And back to Leno.

I don’t like Leno either.  I pretty much think he is far too full of himself for his own good.  He’s not all that funny.  And he puts himself on a pedestal, because he’s convinced he’s better than anyone else.

What NBC should have done was put a gag order on him, preventing him from signing with another network for a period of time.  That way Conan would have gotten a chance to catch his stride, and then we’d find out that Fallon really does have a penis complex.  And THEN we can deal with what Leno wants to do.

Either way, everyone has a contract, and everyone has the possibility of losing big in this.  So it’s just a matter of time before NBC decides what comes next.  Hopefully they’ll make a smarter decision about their 10 pm slot.

What I find interesting is the lack of scripted shows during that time.  On most local networks, you’ll find news.  And there is nothing wrong with watching the news.  But networks like CBS have really nailed it on the head with their 10 pm programming.  Why can’t other networks fall in line?  There is a serious lack of quality programming out in the world today, mostly in the form of scripted shows.  Is it the lack of good ideas, or what?  Whatever it is, something needs to be done.

CBS has a great thing going with the 10 pm lead in for the news, and the news being the lead in for Letterman, and then on to Craig Ferguson, who is – cough cough – my favorite late night talk show host.

The point is NBC is in trouble, and they need to make some serious decisions before they end up having to pay a fortune to anyone.

What do you think about late night television these days?  And who should come out on top?

I know I haven’t been watching Heroes.  I pretty much broke up with the series after the atrocity they call season 2.  And then again one third of the way through season 3.  So I haven’t really been keeping up with my Heroes news.

But it has been confirmed by a source, but not by NBC, that Adrian Pasdar who plays Nathan Petrelli, will no longer be on the show.  Apparently, he’s been killed of before: the end of season 3 when Sylar had slit his throat.  But he had come back to do guest spots and take on the guise of other characters.  However, this is rumored to be the FINAL farewell for the elder Petrelli brother.

Am I surprised?  Not sure.  The real question is: do I care?  And there is no simple answer to that one.

Heroes has been teetering on the edge of being a mediocre show for quite some time.  And again, I have to mention that I gave up on it long ago.  Believe it or not, I actually tuned in for a few scenes when I got home from work tonite.  And I’m not gonna lie, but it was more background noise than anything else.

Also, it’s not really the kind of show that you can put down and pick up randomly at any episode.  You really have to follow it, because the stories are so intermingled and twisted together, and so very elaborate.  And it’s not for the casual viewer, unfortunately.  It’s for the dedicated fan who has been watching since the beginning.  But how many of those are left anyway?

ANYway, Adrian Pasdar will be leaving the show.  His final episode has yet to air, although NBC will not confirm or deny the rumors.

What do you think about Heroes this season?

Well, it looks like NBC has ordered the remaining 9 episodes for it’s new Thursday night sitcom, Community.

While it is a good show, and has quite a few moments of being hysterically funny, it’s certainly not my favorite new sitcom this season.  But the news of Community getting a full season is definitely a relief.  At least it’s getting the chance it deserves.

Too often, networks kill shows that have potential, but that aren’t producing the ratings they should early on.  And really good shows end way too early.  But NBC appears to have put a bit of faith in Community.

And I guess I can see why.
