Wow. I think I can breathe again. After the season 5 finale of Bones, I think I can finally breathe again.  And the truth is, it wasn’t all that spectacular.  The case of the week was interesting enough to be just a case of the week.  However, I felt not connection with the circumstances of the case, nor the main characters until the end of the episode.

And Billy Gibbons was just plain awesome.  Early in the series, his appearances were just that.  Appearances.  Now that he’s speaking, it’s just too cool for words.

The main theme of the finale was change.  Everyone needed a change.  Booth is going off to Afghanistan for a year.  Brennan is studying remains in the Indonesian jungle for a year.  Angela and Hodgins are going to be in Paris for a year.  Everyone needed a break.  That idea had me a little confused at the end, when everyone said they were leaving, but they’d be back in a year.  The concept, in my mind, really only had two options: they could jump the timeline and in the fall when they return, a whole year would have passed, or the far more annoying House route where the main characters just don’t play any role for most of the season and return an actual year later, after the audience spent time getting to know new characters on their own.

Although a jump in their timeline seemed more likely than adding new characters for just one season, it didn’t strike me as the thing they would do.  However, it has been reported that there will be a jump in their timeline, and when they return in the fall, a whole year will have passed. Everyone will have had a whole year of independence, and they will come back the same people, but very different.

Angela and Hodgins will have had a whole year of marriage without crime-solving drama getting in the way.  And for them, that is huge.  Booth will have spent a year in the line of fire, training soldiers.  There is no way he will come back unaffected.  And Brennan will come back with more knowledge than she left with.

On a different note, I was a little disappointed with the ending.  After having invested in 5 years with these characters, the final scene with Booth and Brennan would have really been awesome had they both turned back to each other and kissed.  That would have created a whole different dynamic for the characters, and perhaps would have changed what the writers have in store for the show next season.  They did share a tender moment.  And it meant so much that Brennan and Booth had that connection – it really showed the changes the characters went through with each other over the last five years.

No matter what happens, I’m looking forward to next season and seeing what great new things will happen to my favorite characters.

Honestly, I love EW for a lot of things.  But most of all, I love them for their lists.  They provide me with much needed blog fodder from time to time.  And who doesn’t love lists?  I mean, really.

But I love this particular list because it takes an honest look at what’s wrong with TV these days, and some shows that we just shouldn’t be watching anymore.  I will say upfront that I don’t completely agree with every show on this list, but I can certainly respect why they are on it.

  1. Heroes – Not gonna lie, I broke up with this one after season 2.  And then again after season 3.
  2. Dollhouse – One of those shows I love, that I don’t think should be on this list… but the ratings just aren’t up far enough yet to keep it from failing in its Friday night timeslot.
  3. America’s Next Top Model – I’ve never watched this show, and I don’t plan to start now.
  4. Project Runway – Um… same deal.  But hasn’t it been on long enough?
  5. The Office – I love this show, and really don’t see an end in sight.
  6. Gossip Girl – Ha!  I really tried watching this one, but it’s a daytime soap opera that airs at night on a crappy network.  The End.
  7. Hell’s Kitchen - This used to be a must-see… sadly, not so much anymore.
  8. Bones – I love this show.  I’ve always loved this show.  BUT it is one of those shows that you can put down for awhile, and pick up later and not miss much.  That could be deadly for a show.
  9. House – Yet another show that I love, but can drop for awhile and pick up whenever.  Sure, there’s new things going on this season…
  10. One Tree Hill – This is one that I tried watching, and it felt a little like a soap opera, and a little bit forced.  6 seasons might be long enough.
  11. Dancing with the Stars – They try to keep it new and fresh, but like American Idol, it’s just getting old.
  12. 90210 – I’m fairly certain I remember mentioning last season that this was a mistake to begin with.  Again, I will say, why mess with a good thing?  The original was good.  Leave it there.
  13. Glee – Ok.  I love love LOVE this show.  No, it’s not for everyone.  But I am definitely surprised that it’s even on this list.
  14. Private Practice – I actually finally got caught up with this one like I did with Grey’s Anatomy.  I never really like it all that much, but it was always something to watch when there was nothing else on.
  15. Fringe – Even though Joshua Jackson is my TV-boyfriend, I’ve always felt that this one needed to go.  Come on.  It’s the X-files.  It’s already been done.
  16. Mad Men – I often hear mixed feelings about Mad Men.  It’s good, it’s not good.  Truthfully, I’ve been wanting to check it out, but there’s always something else to be watched.
  17. CSI: Miami – Procedural shows are always great because they really know what they’re talking about.  But CSI has been on for a LONG time.
  18. Ghost Whisperer – Another soapy show that just doesn’t need to be on anymore.
  19. Smallville – Apparently this one has run its course.  Smallville is yet another show that I want to get into, but the more seasons there are, the harder it is, and the longer it’s going to take.  And do I really want to invest all that time?
  20. American Idol - Old and tired.  And I hate reality TV.  And without Paula’s crazy antics and sexual tension with Simon, I just think it’s a waste.  And besides, it’s been on way too long.  It’s just old.

There are definitely a few shows on this that list that I vehemently do not agree with.  But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  As long as they can accept that Bones, House, Glee and Dollhouse are actually good shows.  And I will not be breaking up with any of these shows this season.

There are, however, a few shows that don’t show up on this particular list. Two and a Half Men is a great show, but with recent changes this season like Charlie being in a committed relationship are just things that are going to hurt the original premise of the show.  Plus, Jake is getting a little old to still be the “half” man on that show.

How I Met Your Mother is another show that I’m less than impressed with this season.  Not gonna lie, after that Britney Spears episode two seasons ago, I’ve been really turned off.  And I will say that there are a few good scenes in a few episodes this season, but Barney being committed and dating Robin just really takes away from his character mold.

I don’t see either of those shows ending anytime soon, but it’s something to think about.

What shows are you thinking about breaking up with this season?

The Office – The Meeting

Michael gets worried after David Wallace and Jim have a private meeting. Pam tries to get a headcount for the wedding. Darryl’s worker’s compensation claim makes Dwight suspicious.

No one should be surprised that this week’s episode was a little weaker than the premiere.  Actually, while it was a weaker episode with comedy, I definitely think it was more emotionally charged than most episodes.  And that came from the tension between Jim and Michael.  Jim exerts himself and basically reprimands Michael for telling David that he didn’t deserve the promotion.

It was really cool to see Jim take a stand.  I can’t wait to see that play out more now that they are going to be “Co-Managers.”

Community – Spanish 101

In Spanish class, Senor Chang asks the students to pair up for a project. Jeff’s attempt to team up with Britta fails and he ends up displeased with his actual partner. Annie and Shirley assist Britta with her cause for social justice.

Second episode out of the way – and not as good as the first.  Although Chevy Chase is making strides at being one of the funnier characters on the show.  I don’t have much to say about this episode other than Chevy Chase was funny.  I’ve watched it 3 times, and I’m really not impressed by it.  One more episode will tell.  And also, Chriso is LOVING the show, so it looks like it may be a permanent fixture on my DVR.  * sigh *

Parks and Recreation – Stakeout

After discovering marijuana being grown in the pit, Leslie becomes determined to find out whose crop she had stumbled across.

Umm… it was all about weed.  Oh, and Amy Poehler was funny.

Bones – Harbingers in the Fountain

For the past six weeks Booth has been recovering from brain surgery, and Sweets has finally certified him as mentally fit to return to duty. Meanwhile, while reading her tarot cards, Angela’s psychic reveals that there are several bodies buried under a fountain. Booth and Brennan are skeptical about checking it out, but are surprised when they find the remains of eleven bodies exactly where the psychic said they’d be.

Cyndi Lauper was the guest star.  Chriso and I watched the ENTIRE episode before he said, HEY, I know her.

Bones – The Bond in the Boot

Brennan and Booth are asked to investigate the death of a man who was murdered for the secret contents of his briefcase. They suspect that secret operatives are at work, and their theory is proven correct when they find the liquified remains of a CIA agent in the trunk of a car. Meanwhile, Brennan’s new best-selling book causes tension between her and Booth, and Wendell loses his scholarship.

These last two episodes of Bones were really very good.  It’s the same formula as it’s always been, which is good.  What makes this season really good so far is the relationship between Booth and Bones.  There’s always been tension, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this season would be THE season where they would finally decide that they need to be together.  Anyone who has been faithful to the show will know the excitement.  The old adage goes that loyalty will always be rewarded.  So, I think we are going to see some rewards this weekend.

What were you watching this week?
