Sadly, the rumors may hold water. I’ve been checking the numbers weekly, at my favorite numbers site TV by the Numbers, and ratings are not looking good for Dollhouse this season.
And the rumors have been flying about the cancellation of the show since last season’s finale (or before). According to the ratings, Dollhouse is likely to not be renewed after May 2010. Which is sad, because I love Dollhouse. Now that I have a DVR, I pretty much watch each episode 4 or 5 times before the next one airs. No, I’m not psycho. Sometimes there’s nothing on television to watch, so I’m going to watch something I like. And sometimes it’s Dollhouse.
It’s a shame, really. Joss Whedon has done some amazing work, and he is very well respected in the industry. AND he’s proved himself over and over, more recently with Dr. Horrible.
But 9pm on Friday night has always been an awful timeslot. Especially with Medium moving to CBS, and BSG being on SyFy. Joss just can’t win, apparently. Which is sad, because I love Dollhouse. I really think it’s a great show. But apparently, not everyone thinks so. And if they do, they certainly aren’t watching Friday nights at 9.
So, tell me, Gentle Readers: Has Dollhouse gotten the proper chance to shine?

I really like Dollhouse too, but with the end of last season (since they thought they were being cancelled) they really didn’t leave a ton of great ground to build a second season onto. What really got them into trouble with season 1 too was the whole “client of the week” thing they were going after story wise. I was really hoping that they wouldn’t do that with the start of season 2, but alas. Its a hard call to make, but at this point I think Whedon is spreading himself a bit too thin with his new horror movie coming out and working on new stuff for Dr. Horrible. Its a shame, but I think they’re going to get cancelled mid season. Which will make me sad.

I definitely agree with you about Joss spreading himself thin.
And unfortunately also about the potential mid-season cancellation. And you’re right. There was a lot of “client of the week” stuff going on. There were a few hard, fast, to-the-point storylines that were strong in the first season, but they were buried by way too much of the story of the week. Some of that is good to establish the show and what goes on when nothing is going on. But branching out and focusing on one story and fleshing it out would be important now.
Also, I think they are trying too hard to capture an audience. The problem with the time slot is that there are other good things on, so Dollhouse gets buried. It seems like they are still trying to get established, which they should already be. So they are constantly going to play catch up.
Thanks for you comment. Keep reading
And Viva la Dollhouse!

Ratings were up last night though! 1.0 rating and 3 share…not great of course, but any improvement from last week is crucial!

Thanks for the update, Lauren. This week’s episode was a little creepy. But I loved it anyway. Also, I’m biased
I love anything Joss does, and I’ll watch/listen to/enjoy anything his name is on. I just hope Dollhouse can fight it out.
