5 Reasons I am annoyed by the new iPhone
I never thought I’d get to this point. And I don’t think it has anything to do with the iPhone… more like Apple and AT&T have given me reasons to be annoyed. And I knew this was coming, I was just crossing my fingers that it wouldn’t be like EVERY OTHER CELLPHONE. But I guess it is.
And my list is in no particular order…
1. The hype. It’s been nearly a month since the OFFICIAL announcment, and I can’t even begin to go into detail about all the hype involved. If you’ve been keeping watch, you know what I’m talking about. All the advertisments that it’s the BIGGER, BADDER SMARTPHONE on the block. And I agree, it’s an awesome phone, but you’d think they ease up just a little.
2. The cost. Actually, this is probably the MOST ANNOYING part of the whole process. As advertised, if you are a new customer, you can purchase the phone at the advertised costs. HOWEVER, if you are a LOYAL AT&T customer, you can purchase the iPhone at an inflated price. I’m sorry, but I don’t have 500 beans to throw away…
3. Customer Loyalty. I suppose this one goes hand in hand with my issues with the cost. I am a LOYAL AT&T (and Apple/Mac as well) customer. I bought the first iPhone when it came out and payed the inflated price for it. The downside is that when my ex and I split, the phones were in his name, and they needed to be switched over. And I was considered a NEW customer all over again. Meaning I am not eligible for the upgrade… unless I want to pay extra.
4. The lines. There’s a good chance that if you don’t leave work right now… no, I’m serious. Leave. RIGHT NOW! And stand in line at your local Apple or AT&T retailer chances are, you will not get one right away. I’ve read articles and heard rumors that there are already people standing in line.
5. Apple and Advertising. I really thought that Apple was going to come through for me. The iPhone was announced and hyped up at one cost, and all of a sudden, it’s not going to cost me what I thought. I understand that both companies are trying to be competitive and make money off the deal, but seriously… It would be nice to catch a break.
I spent the better part of the night last night feeling annoyed with a twinge of depression… OVER A PHONE! It’s not something that is terribly important, but I like immediate gratification. However, there is a list of other things on my list of things to get, so I will be putting off throwing down 500 beans for awhile. I plan to wait and see what will happen with my bonus check from work.
Tell me about it!!
Warning to other people. This phone is OVERRATED!
Like you, I was all hot and hyper about the 3G, but in the last week, I’ve started to re-think my intentions to getting one. Specifically,
1) The hype
2) The lines
3) The excessive cost diff between my t-mobile bill and the comparable AT&T bill ($39.99 for 1500 anytime minutes — $59.00 if I included Internet access — versus $89.99 with AT&T for 900 anytime with rollover).
4) *THEN* as I understand it, if that cost wasn’t enough, you will be considered a corporate customer (more money) if you dare to try to use it with an Exchange server for work.
In the end, I may get one, because the phone I have now is dying, but I damned sure don’t want to sign another 2 years with T-mobile considering their service doesn’t reach into my office building, so if anything, I may end up buying an unlocked phone off of e-bay (to include possibly a 2G iphone maybe?).
One thing’s for sure. I’m not holding my breath to buy one on the 11th.
Wanna talk universal conspiracies?
I spent about an hour talking to T-mobile last night. First, about the dying phone to which they say “just go sign a new contract and get a replacement for free”. The second, about the lack of signal in my office building. Their response there was that “we can’t really install any more towers without being able to visit your building to verify no signal, then verify the number of customers in your office. Problem is, visitors aren’t allowed in the building, so in essence, nothing they can do about the crappy signal.
Lastly, we discussed my alternatives. The universal conspiracy comes in because as it turns out, my current 2-year contract ends on Monday the 14th. It’s like I’m being dared to by an iPhone or something.
You are definitely being taunted by the iPhone. I’m going to have to wait to get it though. And like you, I’m not holding my breath to get one Friday. I think I’ll wait til the end of the month and see how things look, and if they live up to all the hype.
So here’s what they can do…
Have someone at Tmobile stand outside the building, screaming to someone inside (seeing as there is no service, it would be silly to try and call once outside)…
“Yup! NO SERVICE!”
Gotta love the cellphone companies. They are ALL corrupt.
I feel your pain.
Hey!
Been thinking about this and the weight of the “no” has overrun the “yes” in determining whether or not I want an iPhone.
The biggest reason for me to go to AT&T is that they’re the only provider who can reach inside my building. I was getting to be “ok” with doubling my phone bill, because the iPhone was doubly useful versus my PEBL.
However, since they want to consider me a “corporate” customer to connect to the WPA2 network at work, I’m simply not willing to triple my cellphone bill just to have the iPhone. I will probably pay $200 for a new T-mobile smartphone off e-bay, then forward messages to my work phone during the day..
That is definitely a plan. After all the crap that happened on Friday with the launch, you may not want an iPhone.
It’s been all over the news. iTunes was down, so people couldn’t finish activating their phones instore… then when they went home, there were still issues, so many iPhones went unactivated for a long time.
Personally, I think the decision to wait is a good one. I just updated my iTunes, and my current iPhone with the updated software, and to be perfectly honest, it’s sufficient. At the moment, I don’t need anything else, so I don’t need to run with the hype. Maybe in a few months when things die down, I’ll consider it again. But I’m perfectly happy with my phone right now.
Good luck with Tmobile!

NOOOOOOOOOOOo if we are both out we gonna get chewed up big time!!!!
