Sex and the City

Talk about closure.  And that was one of the only reasons I went to see Sex and the City.  Well, and to find out Big’s real name.

I went with Kathy, as we bonded over Sex and the City in syndication on the WB.  After the series finale, I think everyone was left unsatisfied, at least a little.  Big decided that he wanted to be with Carrie.  Charolotte was settling into life being an adoptive parent.  Miranda and Steve were together and living in Brooklyn.  And Samantha was in a solid relationship with a model, who stood by her during chemo.

(Bewared of spoliers below… Yeah, I have no shame)

So, Kathy and I are sitting in the packed theater.  And when I say “packed”, I mean there was a freakin’ line to get into the theater AFTER the tickets were bought.  Yeah, it was packed.  AND we were a half hour early, and it was still insane.  Women, in true solidarity fashion, crowded around over the universal show that bonds everyone of us together.  There were previews of some movies I don’t remember, because I was only there for closure.

The movie opened up in true Sex and the City fashion, with the famed theme music, and the entire theater was in an uproar.  Clapping, hooting, screaming.  Yeah, I think it’s safe to say that everyone was PUMPED!

The basic summary of the movie was that the awesome foursome reunites over and over again over a year of their lives, 3 years later.  It’s amazing how everything has changed.  Carrie and Big decided to get married.  Carrie was starting her third book, about after you’ve found love.  Samantha was bicoastal, in the sense that she lived in LA with that man… and went back to NY every chance she got.  She was in a committed relationship, and it was not working for her.  After 5 years, she  needed something new.  Charolotte finds out that she has finally gotten pregnant… after trying for so long, and adopting a child.  And Steve confesses to Miranda that he cheated on her, which led to a 2 hour long (a year in movie timeline world) fight and debate on whether they could be together again.

Big decided that he couldn’t go through with the wedding.  It got too big.  Too much like a circus, and it felt to him that it was no longer him and Carrie.  But the whole world was involved.  It was a devastating scene to watch.  Carrie broke down and screamed and yelled and was humilated on her wedding day, and subsequently did not speak to Big for nearly a year.

The awesome foursome took Carrie’s honeymoon with her, as she couldn’t get a refund, and they spent a fabulous time in Mexico, as Carrie tried to get over her jilting.  Once they returned to NY, Carrie got herself an assistant (Jennifer Hudson), and changed her hair, and perhaps her entire life.  She finally started getting back into life as it should have been.  She refurnished her apartment, and starting living again.

In the meantime, life continued on.  Charolotte had a baby shower, Miranda and Steve decided to try out counselling.  And Samantha debated on her relationship with her man.

In the end, Big was able to apologize to Carrie, and made her a proper proposal.  Charolotte had a baby girl, Samantha broke up with her man, and returned to NY, and Miranda and Steve decided they couldn’t live without each other.

And finally, Big and Carrie were married.  John James Preston and Carrie Bradshaw.  Carrie Preston… Hmph.

Anyway.  I loved the movie.  I rekindled the passion that I never had for the show to begin with, and I feel it soon becoming a sick obsession.
