Sex and the City Reflections
With all the fuss about this movie, and my earlier spoiler-filled summary, I figured I should delve more deeply in my relfections about this movie… rather than get over-excited and tell EVERYTHING that happened. And true to form, I’ll include the things I love and the things I hated about the movie.
Firstly, I want to mention (for those of you who haven’t yet read the post below) that I am a Sex and the City convert. I didn’t come into the show until it was fully in syndication, only a few years ago. Granted, I do feel as though I’ve missed out on the glory and purity that is the original airing on HBO, but alas, I shall live. And I got so excited after seeing the movie that I finally bought the entire series on DVD from Amazon (who is having a sale on some of the SATC dvds).
Secondly, I want to mention that after watching the movie (and buying the series, which will arrive on my doorstep by the end of this week), I have the sudden urge to be more of a girly girl woman. In my need to have a twinge more feminity, I will not be wearing birds on my head, or sporting some of the hideous up and coming fashions that you always see in the show, and most definitely were prevalent in the movie. Simply, I need more shoes. I need more pretty shoes, with heels. And I suddenly have the urge to own hundreds of pairs. Yeah… what can I say… I’m weak.
And I have to say, this definitely came full circle. The SATC movie is definitely a testament to the fans, without a doubt. It’s pretty unbelievable what a ginormous fanbase can do for a show: it gets turned into a movie, so the fans can have closure.
Anyhoo… on to my likes and dislikes. Also, be prepared for spoilers. For those who haven’t yet seen the movie, please come back later on. Continue if you dare. Personally, I don’t mind spoilers, simply because I’m going to watch the movie anyway, and sometimes it doesn’t hurt to have less suprise, less shock. HOWEVER, the reason I saw this movie opening night, and stood in the line AFTER the line to get it was because I didn’t want it spoiled. You’ve been warned.
What I loved:
- Carrie’s “engagement closet.” After his first (and crappy) proposal, Carrie told Big that all she needed was a really big closet. And he built her one. I think it gave a whole new meaning to the term “walk-in closet.” Granted, the first proposal was all business, but the ginormous closet came straight from Big’s heart, and it was important. Shame they had to give it up.
- Charlotte shuffling around while pregnant. Actually, when she’s scurrying, she’s taking tiny steps anyway. But it was soo much cuter when she was 9 months pregnant, and trying to get away from Big. And her prepared/rehearsed line to Big “I curse the day you were born” and her hand gesture… followed by her water breaking. She’s so adorable!
- Miranda and Steve getting back together, after their extended time apart. Yes, Steve cheated, and it was awful to see Miranda not know what to do. And of course, Miranda thought it was her fault after Samantha mentioned her not grooming her….ahem… bikini line. Was it really Miranda’s fault that Steve cheated? Not really. They had let themselves fall into a rut, and things got really bad. But they only got better. Their reuniting scene on the bridge, followed by a hot romp in the bedroom… pure magic.
- Samantha and her dog. Samantha was going through a spell where she wanted to have sex, and her and her man seemed to be in a rut of their own. So Samantha decided to adopt a dog who proved to be her soulmate… and humped everything in sight. It was funny to see the dog during every scene just go to town on pillows and whatever else it could find. I think it was a throwback to Samantha…
- The movie was easy to pick up after being away for 3 years. Carrie mentions it a few times that 3 years have passed and everyone has remained unchanged.. a little older, but still the same girls that came to NYC in the first place.
- Carrie finally had an assistant. Played by Jennifer Hudson. It was nice to see Carrie seek some organization and try to regain some normalcy in her life. Her assistant was a 20-something freshly implanted to NY, in search of love, much as Carrie had 20 years ago. I think her having the assistant showed her that she’s still the same girl that move to NY in search of love and shoes… she was just a little older. It helped her get back to grassroots.
- Sex = coloring. Yeah, that was hilarious. Charlotte’s adopted daughter is 3 and picks up on EVERYTHING. So, rather than talking about S-E-X, they use the euphemism “coloring” to rotate in their stories. Bloody hilarious.
What I was not a fan of:
- They divulged Big’s real name not more than 15 minutes in. I was hoping that it would come towards the end, during the wedding ceremony, and it would be this huge deal. Nope. Charlotte actually read it in the paper, from a wedding announcement for the couple. I was definitely disappointed. And his name was a little ordinary… But I guess that’s the way it was supposed to be. To be perfectly honest, hearing Carrie use Big’s real name was a little awkward.
- I don’t like it when things are predictable. I knew the moment Steve showed up at the rehearsal dinner that something was going to be said to Big, and he wasn’t going to go through with the wedding. Actually I knew once the whole thing became a circus that something was going to go wrong. I realize that that is the premise of the show: Carrie doesn’t have traditional things go right for her… which is what makes her an interesting person and character. But that was a little too predictable.
- Steve cheated. It wasn’t that Steve cheated, but that was awful in and of itself. It was that it was completely out of character, in my opinion. Maybe it was part of his character. He definitely stayed true to form afterwards with Miranda shunning him and the way that whole thing played out. But it seemed to come from left field. Yes, it pushed the story along, and helped prove that Miranda (along with everybody else) is only human, and real things happen to real people.
- Miranda not telling Carrie in the first place that SHE said something to Big to assist with his cold feet. Was he not already married twice before? Did he not have enough to worry about? Also, I thought Big was a little more of an independent thinker. However, he has been known to be non-commital when it comes to Carrie. After all, this has been going on for ten years.
There were many other things I loved and didn’t love about the movie. And I’m sure when it comes out on dvd, I will review it again, and pick up on all the stuff that I missed in the first place.
