Heroes

I just rented the first season of Heroes to watch this weekend. I’ve already gotten through the first three discs, and I can’t seem to figure out why I didn’t watch it while it was on during the real season. Not gonna lie. It’s a little comic booky, but I guess that’s the point. And it works perfectly.

Following a similar format as ABC’s Lost, it has several complex storylines and character arcs occurring all at the same time, with all the Heroes being connected in one way or another. What I find even more appealing is that each character is developing their own super power. They are just regular people who just begin to develop supernatural powers and deal with them they way regular people would seemingly do in reality.

As a result of my renting this and watching it for the first time, I have immersed myself into the deep world of Heroes. I even began checking out podcasts related to the show. Primarily The 10th Wonder Podcast. The guys that produce it really have some incredible insight into the show and to date, it is one of my favorite podcasts.

It’s funny because I had been dying to find a new show to obsess over. With Veronica Mars and The Sopranos being over, I sort of felt a little empty. Sure, shows like Grey’s Anatomy are fantastic, but they are very relationship-centric. I needed another suspenseful drama to satisfy my craving. There’s only so much fangirly relationship stuff a girl can deal with. Prison Break and House, MD have always been pretty good as far as drama/actiony/suspense shows, but there is something inherently different about Heroes. It feels like a throwback to Buffy and the awakening of the Potential Slayers that come out of the ending of that series. I love superheroes. Everyone can relate to them in the way that they were not always superheroes.

Yup. Heroes is going to be my new show for this season, and hopefully many more seasons to come. I think NBC is finally onto something.
