Veronica Mars Axed
Well, it’s officially official this time. Veronica Mars has been canceled, not for lack of trying to save it and bring it back from life support.
And a general consensus stands against the actions of the CW in convincing fans that there was actually something to hope for. Dawn Ostroff was apparently on board with the reworking attempts of Rob Thomas, but with all the resistance around her, the show slowly fizzled out.
I can’t say I’m surprised at any of this. But I was one of those types who still let a glimmer of hope seep in thinking, perhaps the CW was doing something right since their debut in the fall. I am, however, extremely pleased that the “Will it/Won’t it” drama is over with. It was a great show and really didn’t deserve the lack of respect it received.
I’m a huge fan of the first two seasons, with the incredible writing and witty actors that brought the show to life. And season three started off as a disappointment, so it was clear during the season debut in October 2006 that the Fall of 2007 would not see a new Veronica.
Rob Thomas also alluded to Veronica Mars surviving in alternate media, giving fans another glimmer of hope for perhaps a comic book and novel series, much in the way of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who suffered a similar fate. Except Buffy’s ending was a natural progression rather than an abrupt yanking from the fans. But, the comic books and novel series, not to mention the several books from authors analyzing the Cult Classic.
Veronica Mars will be missed, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing something from her in the future.
