Epiphany
I found this rather odd, seeing as though I’ve put Buffy on the backburner for a while, in order to pay more attention to newer shows and episodes that are dooming the popular culture.
So, last night, I’m talking to O-Man, a coworker from Blockbuster (the type that talks and talks and is actually interesting and intelligent). And we get to talking about horrible horror movies, which I have to mention that I’ve never seen. Evil Dead. I had never heard of it before, except, perhaps in passing. But I’ve never seen it. And now, a key line is uttered by O-Man that makes perfect sense to me, and the Buffyverse all of a sudden becomes crystal clear, in a sense. And it’s funny how these things just happen to come up in random conversation.
Anyone who’s seen Buffy knows the importance that has been placed on pop culture references. So, here’s where the Evil Dead reference comes in: Spike is both evil and dead, and that’s all I thought there was to it. Simple, no? “First you want to kiss me, then you want to kill me?”…and that just so happens to be a key line and basic idea of the plot of Evil Dead, AND the characteristically acurate description of Spike from the time he falls in love with Buffy until the very end. Now, wasn’t that convenient? One minute, Spike wants to kiss Buffy, to be with her, and the next? He pretty much wants her dead. Spike=evil dead. Xander has also made passing comments to Spike calling him “Evil Dead.”
I love it when things become clear to me.
